From the Allenford Archives

Just a line to say I’m living
That I’m not among the dead
Though I’m getting more forgetful
And mixed up in the head.

Sometimes I can’t remember
When I’m standing by the stair
If I must go up for something,
Or I have just come down from there.

Standing by the open fridge
My mind is full of doubt
Have I just put the food away,
Or have I come to take it out?

There are times when it is dark out
With my night cap on my head,
Am I only now returning,
Or am I getting out of bed?

So, if it’s my turn to write you
Forgive me, don’t get sore,
I probably think I’ve written
And don’t want to be a bore.

So I remember I do love you
And wish that you were here,
But now it’s nearly mail time
So I’ll say goodbye my dear.

Now I stand here by the mailbox
With my face so very red
Instead of mailing this to you
I opened it instead.
